Deception Pass State Park, its staff, and volunteers are seeking a grant to fully fund a program we will be calling “Educational Transitions” through the No Child Left Inside program. This program will be focused on two very specific age groups; children between the age of three and five and children around age ten (5th graders). The first group will be our entry program and will be designed to help families prepare young children to enter elementary school. The second program will be our exit program and will be designed to help 5th graders transition into middle school. The final piece to this program is a “capstone”. This will be intended for 5th grade students preparing to enter middle school and will be a summer day camp program. All these programs will be focused on environmental education, stewardship, and outdoor recreation.
One question may be, “Why this age group?” Deception Pass State Park already has a robust program that serves you between 1st grade and 4th grade. This program focuses on very similar areas, but partners with schools and local organizations in the form of field trips to the park and in classroom presentations. Additionally, we have the Junior Ranger Program that really focuses on 5 to 12-year old’s, which will already be expanded in 2021.
There have already been some great partnerships that have developed in preparation for this project. We have some partners that have made significant monetary commitments to this project while others have provided in-kind donations to support the program. Finally, some organizations have provided letters of support. This project is intended to start around July 1, 2021 and conclude on June 30, 2023. The application must be submitted no later than November 1, 2020.
We at Deception Pass State Park are exploring every opportunity to connect families and youth to nature. We want the community to be part of this great opportunity to educate youth and families about the environment while engaging participants in the form of outdoor recreation and stewardship. If you or your organization are interested in being part of this opportunity please reach out to the Park Manager, Jason Armstrong, at firstname.lastname@example.org
