Discover and educate!
As one of the Foundation’s most successful programs, the Beach Naturalist Volunteer Program was formally adapted by the park in 2006 along with the designation of the Rosario tide pools as an active restoration zone. These efforts have led to the development of an inter-tidal rope trail and educational programs to help preserve and restore this special natural area.
Today, thousands of students and park visitors explore the inter-tidal habitats of Rosario under the guidance of trained Beach Naturalists. Volunteers assist park staff by providing important educational stewardship messaging so this delicate and loved ecosystem can be protect for future generations.
Volunteer Positions
The Beach Naturalist Volunteer Program is active between May and September when the tides are traditionally low at Rosario and the pools are exposed. Starting in May, volunteers assist with tide pool field trips and provide informal interpretation on the weekends to visitors. Once school is out for the summer, and weekly visitation increases, volunteers assist park staff by delivering informal interpretation throughout the week as well as support Discovery Center operations.
Level I Volunteer
Beach Naturalist Level I volunteers are responsible for providing stewardship education and interpretation at the Rosario tide pools. Operational duties include staffing an education table or roving the tide pools. Volunteers are also expected to greet visitors as well as provide information about the tide pools and the park. Level II Lead
Beach Naturalist Level II leads are responsible for providing stewardship education and interpretation at the Rosario tide pools. Operational duties are similar to those of a Beach Naturalist Level I volunteer though they are also responsible for managing 1-3 additional interns and volunteers. Leads ensure station and shift breaks are covered, accurate information is provided, and visitor contacts are recorded. Leads work to create a safe environment for both volunteers and visitors in the absence of park staff.
Beach Naturalist Level II leads are selected through a competitive process which requires the submission of personal/professional references, letter of interest, and completion of an interview. Click here for more information.
